CD-DA

Another name for the Red Book audio CD format. This standard allows for up to 74 minutes of digital sound that's transferred at 150 kilobytes per second (K/sec)--a data rate known as "single-speed" because the original CD-ROM drives transferred other data at the same rate, which is pitifully slow compared with hard disk speeds. This limitation lead to the development of 2X (double-speed), 4X (quad-speed), and faster CD-ROM drives.
