command-line interface

Before graphical interfaces like Windows, the Mac OS, and X, users interacted with their personal computers by typing text commands. While the drag-and-drop simplicity of a GUI is attractive to many users, particularly newcomers, command-line interfaces often allow greater flexibility and control and are therefore still preferred by many power users.
