diode

These semiconductive electronic components allow current to flow through them in only one direction. Most people are familiar with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which produce light when current is applied, and liquid-crystal diodes (LCDs), which lighten or darken a transparent material when current is applied. LCDs are often used to create flat-panel displays for portable computers.
