newsreader

If you're going to browse newsgroups, you'll need a newsreader--either a standalone app or a built-in one, like Netscape Navigator's. A newsreader is a program that lets you read, download, and reply to the newsgroup messages you want. Some automatically handle the encoding of binary file attachments for you. (Because the Internet was designed for text-only files, binary or nontext files have to be encoded into text for transmission before they are sent.)
