NID

Most buildings with multiple phone lines will have a phone line junction, which telephone companies commonly call a NID. At private residences, NIDs are typically small gray boxes mounted outside the buildings, with padlocks to prevent unauthorized access. Service representatives can access the boxes without entering the buildings.
